Frequently Asked Questions

We hope that the following information will answer any questions you may have about Professional Moms at Home.
What do you mean by "professional"?
We define the word loosely, but in general, what we mean is that this is an organization for women who left the full-time workforce in order to be home with their children. Some PMAH members do work part-time, but our focus is to provide activities and be a support group for women who had to leave or lessen their activity in the professional, paid workforce, whether they were a teacher, a hair dresser, a physician or a rocket scientist.
How old are the moms in PMAH?

It appears that most of us are thirtysomething or older, and many of us are fortysomething with very little kids. Because we are a group geared toward women who have left the full-time workforce to raise children, many if not most of our members pursued higher education and careers during their twenties and didn't have children until they were older and could financially and professionally afford to take a break from the workforce.

Will PMAH guarantee me a placement in a playgroup?

No, we can't guarantee a placement, but we sure will try. Upon joining PMAH you will be contacted by a Board member, a Vice President, who is responsible for serving the needs of moms with children the age(s) of yours. That Board member will look at the existing playgroups (also called "subgroups") to see which ones have openings, which have children of the same age, which are located where. Because we work to serve all of Anne Arundel County, some moms are able to connect with very local playgroups. Other have to drive a bit. But new members are joining all the time, so we're generally quite successful at placing a mom into a group.

Do I have to join a playgroup?

Absolutely not. Playgroups are often most desired by moms who are newly home with babies or small toddlers. Once children enter preschool it can be harder for a stay-at-home mom to commit herself and her child(ren) to daytime activities. Many members join us solely for the opportunity to meet other women who left or curtailed careers for family.

Where do PMAH activities and events take place?

We're all over the place! We don't have an office or homebase, per se, so the events we plan are held in parks, community centers, child-oriented businesses, restaurants, public attractions and in the homes of members. Playgroup locations are determined by the members of the playgroup, but the gatherings usually occur in the homes of each group's members. Membership-wide activities are planned by our Events Committee.

How essential is it that I be a PMAH volunteer?

It's pretty essential, but we aren't policing each member's activities. Because PMAH is entirely run by volunteers, we need everyone to help. Granted, some of the work (such as serving on the Board or running a committee) is more involved than other tasks (such as occasionally distributing brochures or baking for an event). The dues we charge members are used to help promote the organization, and reach out to  more moms, and to help pay for or reduce the cost of events. The payment of dues does not buy or guarantee services. Everyone needs to chip in with time and energy as best she can. In fact, many women join PMAH in order to become actively involved in helping run the organization. We have editors, attorneys, accountants, event planners, human resources executives all using their professional abilities—which keeps their skills and résumés current—for our benefit and their own.

Does PMAH provide child care so members can volunteer or participate in activities?

We wish! Nope, we do what we do while juggling kids. Mom-only events are planned for evenings, when a woman can hopefully pass her kids to her spouse or a sitter.

Do I have to attend regular meetings?

Not at all! Some committees hold meetings, many don't. We have two "general membership" meetings a year, which we call the Spring Kickoff and the Fall Kickoff. These events are a combo of a meeting, social hour and then a presentation, typically by a parenting- or mom-related expert.

How does PMAH communicate with its members?

We use email, and sometimes we send email messages to all 100+ members at once, so please make sure we don't get lost in your spam or bulk folder.

Where do PMAH members live?

We're all over Anne Arundel County, but the largest concentration of members seems to be in or near Annapolis, Severna Park and Crofton.

Professional Moms at Home is a volunteer-run organization for women who have left the full-time workforce in order to care for their children. The group was founded in Annapolis, Maryland, and still serves that area as well as greater Anne Arundel County. Membership dues are used to pay for promotional materials (brochures, flyer, etc.,) and to cover or reduce the cost of events and activities for moms and tots—and, sometimes, outings and activities just for moms!
